The science behind our calculations

The Formula

We use a straightforward calculation based on appliance wattage, usage time, and electricity rate:

Daily kWh = (Watts × Hours per day) ÷ 1000

Daily Cost = Daily kWh × Rate per kWh

Monthly Cost = Daily Cost × 30 days

Yearly Cost = Daily Cost × 365 days

Appliance Data

We've pre-loaded common South African appliances with typical wattage values based on manufacturer specifications and real-world testing. You can adjust these values to match your specific appliances.

Common Wattages:

  • Geyser: 3,000-5,000W
  • Kettle: 2,000-3,000W
  • Microwave: 800-1,200W
  • TV: 50-200W
  • LED Light: 8-15W

Typical Usage:

  • Geyser: 4-8 hours/day
  • Kettle: 10-15 minutes/day
  • TV: 3-5 hours/day
  • Fridge: 8-12 hours/day*
  • Lights: 4-6 hours/day

Electricity rates vary by municipality and tariff structure in South Africa. Our default rate of R3.00/kWh is based on the 2024-2025 national average for residential customers.
